Visit Aspura
A search for Aspura will turn up a list of places it’s near— Jaipur, 44 miles; the Taj Mahal, 51 miles; Agra Fort, 52 miles—but little about the village itself. In this silence lies a secret. Its name means “the place where wishes come true,” or so believed the saint Ramdas who came to Aspura in the 17th century and found enlightenment. Today, this village at the foot of the Aravalli hills is known for its hand weavers, an art and industry practiced almost exclusively by women. Weaving has changed the lives of the women of this eastern Rajasthani village, where, despite a 25% literacy rate for females, mastery of their craft means many women out-earn their husbands or are the sole supporter of their families.
